This Act prevents members of urban local bodies, such as municipal councils, from switching political parties after being elected or voting against their party's official directions. It applies to all elected council members representing political parties in urban local governance. Under the law, a member loses their council seat if they voluntarily resign from their party or defy party voting orders without official approval or subsequent forgiveness within fifteen days. However, disqualification is avoided if at least two-thirds of the party's council members agree to merge with another political party. Decisions on disqualification are made by the council chairperson. This law matters because it promotes political stability and maintains voter trust by curbing opportunistic party defections in city governments.
