The Madhya Pradesh Contingency Fund Act, 1957, establishes a dedicated financial reserve known as the Contingency Fund of the State of Madhya Pradesh. This fund functions as an "imprest" account—a revolving pool of money held by the Governor and managed by the Finance Department. Its primary purpose is to allow the government to meet urgent, unforeseen expenditures that cannot wait for the standard legislative budget approval process. Once the government spends money from this fund, it must later present the expenditure to the Legislative Assembly for formal authorization, at which point the fund is replenished to its original level.
